As per initial findings of national and international scientists, Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark is home to abundant and diversified geological, morphological, cultural heritages, beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity. Regarding geological heritages, the aspiring geopark territory has various types of metamorphic rocks representing major complexes, formations in the region and magmatic rocks of different eruptive forms. In terms of cultural heritage, this territory has remained tracks of different cultures of Stone Age, Sa Huynh, Champa and Great Viet which inherit and interweave each other.

In an effort to preserve and promote the heritage values, especially geoheritage, cultural heritage and landscapes as well as biodiversity, Quang Ngai Province has undertaken a wide range of activities, including the establishment of province-level Ly Son Geopark, Small Ly Son Islet Conservation Project, Ly Son Marine Protected Area. In hope to further explore the potential and promote the values of Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark, the province has determined to seek a UNESCO global geopark designation.

To strengthen scientific evidence on geological and cultural heritage, to further supplement findings and research achievements from scholars, researchers and policy-makers in a bid to finalize the application dossier to submit UNESCO for the recognition of a UNESCO global geopark, as well as to provide necessary information for the conservation, management and development of Quang Ngai global geopark, and to commemorate the 110th anniversary of unearthing Sa Huynh Culture, the People’s Committee of Quang Ngai Province in collaboration with UNESCO Commission in Vietnam host an International Workshop on the research, management and development of heritage values in Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark.
